From as far back as she could remember, Australian watercolour artist, Jocelyn Carmel Brown has always painted. It was especially exciting for her when, at the age of ten, her painting was included on an UNESCO calendar which was distributed world wide. However, it was not until after the birth of her third son in the early 1980s that she was able to take up formal study at the Canberra School of Art. It was here that she became attracted to the watercolour medium with its qualities of fluidity, transparency and luminosity.
During the 1980s and 1990s Jocelyn combined her emerging art career with that of her former career as an academic librarian. She mainly specialized in portraiture, figurative studies and the flora and fauna of the Canberra Bush. After acquiring an Arts Council Grant and winning many awards her works were purchased by major institutions such as the National Library of Australia, the Australian National University and the Canberra Community Hospital. Her portraits have been hung on three occasions in the Portia Geach Portraiture Prize .
In the late 1990s Jocelyn moved to the Byron Shire in the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales. Inspired by this vibrant area's lush rainforests and sparkling coastlines her work immediately took on a transformation. She began using more exuberant, brighter colours and. deviating from the traditional method, began mixing inks with watercolour.
Jocelyn is currently working on a series highlighting the individual chacteristics of the local villages They are brightly coloured strong designs with a quirky naive flavour. From April this year Jocelyn will be travelling to France, Greece and Malaysia where she will spend several months painting and catching up with family and colleagues.
